Cornelius W. Friesen, minister and farmer, was born on September 7, 1901 in Osterwick, Manitoba to Peter and Marigan (nee Weiland) Friesen. He grew up as one of eight children. Friesen was baptized on May 17, 1921 by Rev. John Dueck and became a member of the Chortitzer Mennonite Church. On October 29, 1922 he married Maria Schroeder. Their marriage produced 13 children of which one daughter predeceased him. After serving as songleader for several years, Friesen was elected by the congregation and ordained in 1930. He carried out a very active ministry preaching more than 2200 messages and was known for his enthusiasm and dedication. Cornelius W. Friesen retired to Niverville, Manitoba where he died on September 8, 1975 at the age of 74.
